This was a very hard trail for me—slow and steady was my goal on the uphill. Good. Take a left on Hwy 288 and drive to the end at Hwy 178. In winter, the road could get a little icy and may not be safe without winter tires or proper traction. The views at the top are well worth the climb! This is a beautiful trail & in my opinion, the best way to achieve the SC state highpoint without driving up to the top. I started from Chimneytop Gap, which cut out about 1.5 miles off each way. It was a great steady climb, once I was headed in the right direction. From Greenville head north on Hwy 276. Drove over from North Georgia to climb this mountain. So worth the extra mile! From there it is 4.4 miles roundtrip to reach the Sassafras Mountain summit. You will make some creek crossings, gain elevation through the forest, and pass by Mills Creek Falls (25 ft).
